Say hello to the nation’s Fave Dave

Principality Building Society and Wales Online's St. David's Day campaign has got the nation talking, with Prime Minister David Cameron revealing his wife Samantha's 'Fave Dave' is funnyman David Walliams.

The video to support the competition, inspired by the cult movie 'Being John Malkovich', has gone viral on social media with over 20,000 views and over 300 comments from people across the country telling stories of their favourite Daves, Davids, Dais, Dafydds and Dewis.

But despite winning the vote of 'Sam Cam', the Little Britain star has been beaten to the prize by David Pinder, 68, from Newtown.

Dave, now retired from the manufacturing industry, was nominated by friend Gwen Jones, who is also from Newtown. Having never entered a competition before, Gwen saw the ‘My Fave Dave’ campaign and said it sparked her imagination to enter good friend Dave.

Gwen said: “I never normally enter competitions but I thought this suited Dave down to the ground. Following my own battle with cancer and my husband’s passing in December 2013, Dave and his wife have always been there to support me.“

“Dave helped me hugely when I renovated my new house after my husband passed away. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he is on hand day and night to help me with anything I need, despite having his own children and grandchildren to look after also. I am so glad he has been chosen – he deserves a great holiday.”

Having discovered he was chosen by Principality to win the My Fave Dave competition following Gwen’s nomination, Dave said: “It was a great shock and surprise! I knew Gwen had nominated me but I never thought I would win.

“Gwen has had a tough few years, so I wanted to help her with her house renovations. I enjoy doing it, especially now I’m retired because it gets me out of the house too, and you get a great sense of satisfaction.

“I haven’t had a chance to think about where we’ll visit with our holiday vouchers but I’m really looking forward to the break.”

Ann-Marie Koukourava, Marketing Director at Principality Building Society, said: “As Wales’ largest building society, we wanted to do something fun for St. David’s Day and we are delighted with the phenomenal response to our My Fave Dave campaign. The stories have ranged from the hilarious to the heart-warming; picking a winner was a tough decision but we think we’ve chosen a worthy Dave.”
