Principality employees put on their running shoes for charity challenge
Two employees from Principality Building Society have put on their running shoes to complete four half marathons all in the name of charity.
Bethan Evans and Caroline Smart from Wales’ largest building society are running more than 52 miles to raise money for Mind Cymru, Principality’s Charity of the Year.
Bethan and Caroline, both 32, have already completed Swansea and Tenby half marathons and will be taking on the Cardiff and Birmingham half marathons in the next few weeks.
Caroline from Pencoed, said: “We both did the Cardiff half marathon last year and wanted to go that extra mile, or 39 extra miles, to challenge ourselves and hopefully raise lots of money for this worthwhile charity.
“We have already raised £630 thanks to our family, friends and colleagues at Principality and we hope to improve that by the end of our races.”
Every year Principality raises money for a different Charity of the Year. The charity is nominated by a member of staff at the Society and then shortlisted among five others, before being voted as the official charity by staff at Principality’s Cardiff-based head office, 53 branches and 18 agencies across Wales and the borders.
All the money raised in 2015 will be donated to Mind Cymru, to support the charity which provides advice and support to anyone experiencing a mental health problem. It campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and ensure that the one in four of us who experience mental health problems each year get both support and respect.
One of its priorities is to support the network of 20 local Minds to deliver services in communities around Wales. Local Minds offer direct support to people with mental health problems, including drop-in centres, counselling services and community projects.
Mind Cymru Interim Director Janet Pardue-Wood said: “A huge thank you to Bethan and Caroline for their amazing fundraising work!
“Mind Cymru is here to make sure anyone experiencing a mental health problem has somewhere to turn for help and support. We could not do that without donations from individuals and organisations. We are very grateful to Principality and to all the individuals and teams within the organisation who continue to support us with such enthusiasm and brilliant fundraising activities.”
In 2014, Principality raised a record total of more than £86,000 for its 2014 Charity of the Year, MS Society Cymru.
Throughout the year Principality staff completed a range of activities including gruelling triathlons, bathing in a bath of beans and shaving their head to raise the final total of £86,156.
