High Street Week: Queen Street
Principality Building Society has been on the high street for over 150 years. This week we are celebrating the valuable contribution our busy high streets make to the Welsh economy, as well as the vital role they play in community life.
Today we focus on our Queen Street branch in Cardiff city centre. Queen Street branch has extended its opening hours, we ask branch manager, Andrew Gay, why this is important to the high street.

What are branch opening hours?
We are open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday with the exception of opening at 9.30am on a Wednesday and open until 7pm on a Thursday. Saturday the branch is open 9am-2pm.
Why is it important to have extended opening hours on your high street?
Having extended opening hours allows us to be available when our members need us. In the City centre people generally work between 9am and 5pm so having that window after 5pm where members can transact on their accounts or speak to an in-branch specialist is a real bonus. Mortgage appointments are really popular in this time.
What makes your high street different?
Being in the capital centre of Wales our high street (Queen Street) is different because it is busy 24 hours a day with a diverse range of people ranging from city centre workers to tourists. Our high street also has the most of amount of competitors on it compared with Principality’s other branches and people often visit Queen Street purely to do their financial transactions.
What makes your high street important?
Our high street is extremely important, it is an iconic street in the capital of Wales and as the largest building Society in Wales it is vital that we have a presence on the street. Our head office is also just behind the branch and is a great location to work.
How does your branch support your high street?
Our branch supports the high street by being open for the extended hours, offering people on the high street the opportunity to have access to cash through our cash machine and generally giving people the opportunity to discuss their finances. We also take part in a range of community activities in our branch.
