Bangor’s Principality branch celebrates 50 years in the community
Principality Building Society’s branch at the heart of Bangor’s town centre is celebrating its 50th anniversary since it first opened its doors to customers.
The branch officially opened its branch at 220 High Street in December 1966 and has been serving the local community as Wales’ largest building society ever since.
To celebrate the special occasion, staff greeted Members who came in to branch with birthday cake and a glass of fizz, giving them the opportunity to win a signed Welsh rugby shirt in a raffle draw.
The Bangor branch was joined by its longest-serving and youngest Members, Caradog Jones, 84, who opened his account the day after the branch officially opened in 1966, and 10 month old Luka Stabi, whose account was opened by his grandmother in February.
Mr Jones from Bangor said: “I owned the butchers on the high street and as I was a local business I wanted to support the high street and the community. I was also very friendly with the manager at the time. The branch was very different 50 years back, with no technology and everything done by hand. Interest rates were a whopping 14% back then. What hasn’t changed is the friendliness of the staff.”
Dafydd Pritchard, Bangor branch manager said: “The 50th anniversary of this branch marks our dedication to the high street here and in towns across the whole of the country. While a number of financial institutions have chosen to withdraw branches from local communities in recent times, we’re more committed than ever to our high street branches.
“Principality has always believed in trusted, face-to-face service, allowing us to get to know our loyal customers, from those who have been with us for 50 years, to those who opened an account today. Here’s to the next 50 years.”
The sixth largest building society in the UK, Principality has 53 branches and 18 agencies in communities across Wales and the borders.
