Christmas activities on a budget

Christmas really is one of the most wonderful times of the year – but there’s no denying that it can be costly.

But the festive season should be all about enjoying time with your family, which doesn’t need to cost a thing!

If you don’t have a massive budget – or if you’ve spent it all on presents – there’s no need to worry. Here are some great Christmas activities to get involved in, without needing to break the bank.

Deck the halls!

There’s nothing that says Christmas more than a decorated home - but it doesn’t have to cost a lot to create that festive feeling.

Homemade decorations can be great fun to create. Pinterest has plenty of ideas and tutorials that will help you make use of supplies you may already have at home.

Paper snowflakes, handmade decorations and brightly coloured paper chains all add a personal touch and keep the family entertained.

Check out local entertainment

Taking your child to the pantomime and to see Santa is all part of the magic of Christmas, and they don’t have to be expensive trips!

Save some money by looking at what's on locally: a (free) visit to Father Christmas at your nearest shopping centre or perhaps a carol concert at your local church.

A local pantomime or nativity play is also cost-effective entertainment that will undoubted get you into the Christmas spirit.

Christmas movies

Over the festive period there is usually lots on television to get excited about. From Christmas classics to family favourites, get the whole family together and enjoy a great movie!

If you’re subscribed to an online streaming service, these platforms will also have plenty of festive films available for you to watch.

Bake Off

Baking with the family is lots of fun and a great way to create thoughtful little gifts to give to friends and family - saving you some money.

From mince pies and cookies to Christmas cakes and gingerbread, what’s not to love?

Host a Christmas party

A Christmas party doesn’t have to be expensive. Ask everyone to bring a dish or something to drink, play some games and enjoy quality time with your loved ones.

Christmas cards and gift-wrapping

Christmas cards and wrapping paper: relatives are often genuinely touched by a bit of homemade sparkle.

Gather your craft supplies or get handy with the potato printing – festive craft sessions are great for building excitement in the run-up to the big day and something fun to do with the kids.

Go for a wintery walk

Wrap up warm and enjoy the great outdoors by taking a wintery walk with family. Fresh air is not only great for your health, but there are also some fantastic walks in the UK.

Before heading out, try searching the Internet for walks near you. You may be surprised to find some fantastic trails right on your doorstep.
