Principality helps to build hospital orchard
More than 100 Principality colleagues will overhaul acres of overgrown land to help the health and wellbeing of patients, visitors and the local community in Llandough.
The ‘Ein Berllan – Our Orchard’ will be created on seven acres of semi-rural pasture and woodland which makes up part of the Llandough Hospital estate. With Llandough Hospital fast becoming a long- term recovery and rehabilitation hospital, the orchard will help patients enjoy fresh air, natural light, wildflower meadows and lots of wildlife.
Volunteering will include a range of gardening, including clearing, planting, weeding, and path building.
James Harper, corporate social responsibility manager, said: “We are delighted to announce this exciting volunteering partnership with the University Hospital Llandough that will provide colleagues with our biggest outdoor make-over challenge to date. The entire project is all about boosting the health and wellbeing of patients and visitors at the hospital and the orchard will become a wonderful resource for the entire community.”
Simone Joslyn, Head of Arts and Health Charity said “Ein Berllan Our Orchard is an exciting project that will provide a unique outdoor space to our patients who attend University Hospital Llandough, some of which spend a lot of time recovering in a hospital environment. The outdoors provides a healing environment which can aid recovery and rehabilitation and improve health and wellbeing and Our Orchard will be the perfect place to assist this.
“We look forward to Principality joining us in helping to realise this vision and create an enjoyable space to benefit patients, staff, visitors and the local community in the future.
“We are grateful to all of our volunteers who are giving up their time to help out and also raising funds to enable us develop this space as no NHS funds will be spent on Our Orchard.”
