Corporate Social Responsibility
Introduction to our CSR work
Principality Building Society was formed in 1860 around the ethos of helping people; helping people save money and helping people buy a home. We have grown considerably but what we do remains as relevant today as it was back then, and we are very proud to be at the heart of high streets throughout Wales and the borders.
Our purpose is to help people prosper at every stage of life, and at the very heart of this is our recognition of the importance of responsible business. To us responsible business is about doing the right things for our Members, our staff, our communities, and the natural environment; leading where we can, and learning constantly.
Back in 2016 we introduced three multi-generational theme areas to help drive and develop our responsible business activities; all aligned to our purpose-led, responsible, mutual, and community focused business. The themes include getting and staying in a home, health and wellbeing, and financial education. We reflect on our CSR activities each year and are confident these themes remain relevant today and will in the years ahead.
The delivery of financial education in schools is something we are hugely supportive of and we will continue to champion the increase in opportunities for pupils to learn, support teachers and work with key partners (including Young Money and the London Institute of Banking & Finance) to provide impactful qualifications and sustainable help.
We also take great pride in our Business Class school partnerships across Wales; working with Business in the Community and Careers Wales, and also the way our Branch colleagues support their local Primary Schools.
In the past 18 months, we have impacted on over 10,000 students across Wales and the borders by teaching financial education to schools.
We love helping charities and back in 2016 introduced a charity partnership approach, which brings different charities together over a three year period, along with matching every £1 fundraised by staff with another £1 (up to a maximum of £150,000 per year).
In 2019 we started supporting Teenage Cancer Trust (1062559) and Alzheimer’s Society Cymru (296645); and both have big ambitions for their local services across Wales and the amazing help they provide.
We want to reduce the impact our business has on the natural environment and are committed to ‘doing more’ in reducing paper consumption and single use plastic, our recycling rates, energy use and staff travel.
We will challenge ourselves, ask big questions, learn and encourage our staff and Members to embrace changes that will reduce environmental impact in the years ahead. Again, we will work with key partners to help ensure Wales continues to be a leader on environmental issues and the wider areas of sustainability.
