At Principality Commercial, we are dedicated to building possibilities within local communities. That’s why we’re delighted to have supported the redevelopment of the Howfield Hotel in Merthyr Tydfil with commercial funding.

RWP Properties has transformed the former Howfield & Son’s bakery, which first opened its doors in 1921, into a vibrant mixed-use development. The site now features an eight-bedroom boutique hotel, two retail units, and 13 residential flats.

Located on the High Street, the development is a valuable addition to the town centre and just a two minute walk from Principality Building Society’s Merthyr Tydfil branch.

Working together to build possibilities

Renovation of the former bakery began in 2022 and was completed in early 2024, breathing new life into a prominent town centre building.

The vision behind the project was to create a central hub for both visitors and local residents - supporting job creation, encouraging footfall, and contributing to the wider regeneration of Merthyr Tydfil High Street.

James Ford of Principality Commercial said:
“We are really pleased to have supported RWP Properties in delivering a project that makes a positive impact on the local community. This is a fantastic example of how thoughtful investment can regenerate a historic high street building while preserving its heritage. We hope our funding will help enable more projects like this in the future.”

Richard Powell of RWP Properties said:
“We are extremely happy with the finished Howfield development; we have been working on Merthyr High Street for over six years and have just commenced our third project. It is great to see all the new developments happening when visiting.

The businesses are flourishing within these new spaces and creating additional employment within Merthyr Tydfil. People are using the hotel and seeing residents with their families walking to and from school is generating a buzz in Merthyr and we are pleased that we can play a small part in the area’s enhancement.

We are now commencing our third project on Merthyr High Street. We are delighted with what has been achieved and are glad be part of the Castle House renovation. We hope that these transformations can make an impact on Merthyr's regeneration and we are excited for the future.”
