Principality Building Society unveils street art mural at Rumney RFC to celebrate the club and local community

Principality Building Society has unveiled the first of a series of street art murals at Cardiff based Rumney RFC, as part of their HeART of the Community campaign, to celebrate the club and the role it plays within the local community.

During the Autumn Nations Series, Principality Building Society, proud partners of the WRU, are bringing clubs and communities together, by awarding unique co-created murals displayed at three rugby clubhouses across Wales, as well as a £5000 donation. The first club has been unveiled as Rumney RFC, the second will be announced next week and the third will be decided via a competition, giving fans the chance to nominate their club and community for this unique prize.

Rumney RFC was chosen by former Welsh International and British and Irish Lion, Jamie Roberts, to celebrate the place where his career on the rugby pitch began. The mural was created by Welsh street artist Rmer One, who collaborated with the club in its design to ensure the mural is a true reflection of its ethos and community. It contains a nod to Jamie Roberts, their home-grown star and also references the club’s continued success in the Mallet Cup, the oldest rugby competition in Wales, which they have won 12 times.

Vicky Wales, Chief Customer Officer at Principality Building Society, said: “We’re delighted to be unveiling the fantastic mural at Rumney RFC during this year’s Autumn Nations Series. HeART of the Community has been developed to showcase the importance of rugby clubhouses across Wales. They are the heart of their community, a place where players, fans and members of the local area can come together. We’re proud to be celebrating these special places and are committed to continuing to use our partnership with the WRU to champion and support the amazing work that they do.”

Speaking at the unveiling Jamie Roberts, said: “As the place where I first picked up a rugby ball, I have many precious memories at Rumney RFC, and the club will always have a special place in my heart. It’s great to see Principality Building Society celebrating the Rumney RFC community and recognising the important role the clubhouse plays within the club and within clubs like ours across Wales.”

Andrew Wilcock, Club Secretary and Senior Team Manager at Rumney RFC, said: “The Rumney RFC community is a special group of individuals and an integral part of our local community. It has been fantastic to work alongside Principality Building Society and Rmer One to create this personal, one of a kind mural that is the perfect representation and celebration of our extraordinary community. We’re delighted to have this permanent reminder of the clubs special history which we will cherish for years to come.”

The competition to win the third and final mural will be announced on 23rd November, whilst the campaign can be followed via Principality’s social channels (@principalitybs) and the hashtag #HeartOfTheCommunity.
