Principality Building Society supports more than 3000 pupils thanks to £100,000 skills fund

A £100,000 fund set up by Principality Building Society at the start of the year, has seen more than 3000 secondary school pupils learn vital money management skills and gain recognised qualifications.

The fund was set up fund with The London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF) and was accessible to schools across Wales and the Borders. It’s part of an ongoing partnership between Principality and LIBF who have worked together for a number of years, helping make qualifications accessible to as many schools and students as possible.

This year, 2797 qualifications were achieved from Level 1 to Level 3, with 1962 students achieving a Level 2 qualification graded A* to C. Whilst 106 students achieved a Level 3, which is an A level equivalent qualification.

Vicky Wales, Chief Customer Officer at Principality Building Society, said: “I’m delighted that the reach of financial education is growing across Wales thanks to our commitment to financial education. We’re very proud to be working with LIBF to help future generations.  It’s inspiring to see the level of attainment across the board and will provide a confidence boost to pupils as well as learning very important life skills that prepare them for the challenges of today and their future career ambitions. More than 50 schools are receiving funding which is great to see, and my thanks go to each pupil for working so hard and thank you to all the school staff for their sustained efforts.”

Debi Howell, Financial Capability Relationship Manager for Wales, at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, said: “The funding from Principality Building Society has made an enormous difference – enabling so many more young people across Wales to benefit from a valuable financial education and achieve a GCSE equivalent qualification.

“Lliswerry High School are one shining example of this. They have really embedded finance into their curriculum this year and achieved outstanding exam results. More than 300 students aged 14-16 years old are currently studying a Level 2 LIBF financial capability course at the school – an expansion successfully driven by their learning coach, Fiona May. Seeing the success that the students have enjoyed is everything I could have wished for from the strong partnership that LIBF continues to have with Principality.”
